One of the things I like most about traveling is getting inside info. Like from the people living there and not feeling too touristy. As I don’t have friends living over the entire world (hello J. in southern France, hello Ä in Canada, hello M. and S. in Paris, hello M. in London and hello M. in Thailand – OK I do have friends over the world) I sometimes need to find my information elsewhere. And that’s where Foursquare gets in the picture. It would be better if we had internet access all over the world for free, all the time (here free wifi everywhere steps in) but we don’t have that luxury. And sometimes we do. So if you’re abroad, try to use the free wifi whenever you go and otherwise use it at your hotelroom/at your hostel/in your tent. Because Foursquare is super easy to use and comes in handy in places you’ve never been.

First you need to make a new account, but afterwards you can immediately start using the app. You can check in into places (like Facebook checkins) but you can also hit the search button – the magnifying glass. You can search near your current location, or you can enter an address. This is smart to do when you don’t have internet access, you can browse fun addresses before leaving and type an address where you will approximitely go to. You can choose from a variety of things:

  • Best nearby
  • Specials
  • Food
  • Nightlife
  • Coffee
  • Shops
  • Sights
  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Outdoors
  • Saved
  • Trending
  • Recently opened
I use the food, nightlife, coffee, shops, sights and arts & entertainment all the time. Trending is fun too, so you can see what is very popular right now so you know where to go! If you choose one of the above, the app will show you the best places around your current location or the address you typed. The fun part is that you can open all locations or suggestions and see what people had to say about it. Sometimes they get grades too, so you know if it’s a good or a poor restaurant. And they will give you tips like: When coming out of the metro, absolutely take the lift upstairs! Don’t take the stairs!! (This was a very good tip I read after taking 100 flights of stairs) Next to that, if there are any opening hours they will be listed. You can click on the address and get directions to it by using GPS and a little map. Super easy!
So we almost never walk around like a real tourist anymore, eating at horrible places because we don’t know any better. Thank you internet, for coming into our lives and making it possible to find nice apps like Foursquare 🙂

Een van de dingen die ik het leukst vind aan reizen is de inside info krijgen. Dus de leuke plaatsjes doorkrijgen van de mensen die er wonen zodat je je niet te erg toerist voelt. Aangezien ik geen vrienden over de hele wereld heb wonen (hallo J. in zuid Frankrijk, hallo Ä in Canada, hallo M. en S. in Parijs, hallo M. in Londen en hallo M. in Thailand – OK ik heb een boel vrienden over de wereld) moet ik soms mijn informatie ergens anders vandaan halen. En daar komt Foursquare in the picture. Het zou het best zijn als we overal, altijd gratis internettoegang zouden hebben (hier komt dan weer gratis wifi) maar die luxe hebben we niet op het moment. En soms hebben we dat wel… Dus als je in het buitenland bent, probeer dan de gratis wifi te gebruiken overal waar je komt en anders zou je het even moeten gebruiken voordat je de deur uitgaat van je hotelkamer/hostel/tent. Want Foursquare is supermakkelijk in gebruik en is erg handig voor plaatsen waar je nog nooit bent geweest.
Eerst moet je een account maken, maar erna kan je direct beginnen met het gebruiken van de app. Je kan bij plaatsen inchecken (zoals Facebook checkins) maar je kan ook op de zoek button drukken – het vergrootglas. Je kan zoeken in je nabije omgeving waar je nu bent, of je kan een adres invoeren. Zoals ik zei: Als je geen internet hebt, is het handig om die laatste mogelijkheid te gebruiken als je weet waar je die dag ongeveer naartoe gaat. Als je op de search button hebt gedrukt kan je uit verschillende dingen kiezen:

  • Specials
  • Food
  • Nightlife
  • Coffee
  • Shops
  • Sights
  • Arts & Entertainment
  • Outdoors
  • Saved
  • Trending
  • Recently opened
Ik gebruik de food, nightlife, coffee, shops, sights and arts & entertainment heel erg vaak. Trending is ook leuk, want dan zie je wat er op dit moment gebeurt in je omgeving en wat het meest populair is – misschien is er wel een opening van een galerie waar veel mensen hebben ingecheckt. Als je één van de bovenstaande aanklikt, zal de app je de beste locaties in jouw current location of het adres wat je ingetypt hebt laten zien. Het leukste is dat je al deze locaties kan openen en kunt zien wat mensen hierover te zeggen hebben of welke suggesties ze voor je hebben en dat ze vaak een cijfer krijgen. Zo weet je meteen of het een goed of slecht restaurant is. En ze geven vaak ook tips zoals: Als je uit de metro komt, neem dan absoluut de lift naar boven! Neem niet de trap!! (Dit was een heel handige tip die ik las nadat ik de 1000 trappen naar boven had genomen) En als er openingstijden zijn voor een locatie, dan staan ze vrijwel altijd aangegeven. Je kan het adres ook aanklikken en ter plaatse een routebeschrijving (via GPS en een plattegrond) krijgen. Erg handig!
Tegenwoordig lopen we bijna nooit meer als een toerist rond, of eten we bij verschrikkelijke restaurants omdat we niet weten waar we naartoe zouden moeten gaan. Dank u wel internet, dat u in ons leven kwam en handige apps als Foursquare mogelijk maakte 🙂
